Dear Colleagues of the IBBS,
We are profoundly sad to let you know that our colleague and friend Professor Jean-Michel Scherrmann, Honorary Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy of Paris, suddenly passed away on Monday, June 26th, 2023.
Visionary and passionate, he was a pioneer in developing pharmacokinetics and in particular neuropharmacokinetics. As an international expert in the field of brain barriers, he has worked hard throughout his career to understand the mechanisms that govern blood-brain exchanges. For decades, he has been laboratory director and team leader in an INSERM laboratory, University of Paris (France), dedicated to understanding the role of the blood-brain barrier in the variability of response to CNS drugs. Jean-Michel Scherrmann has made major contributions to pharmacokinetics, drug-metabolizing enzymes and drug transporters, being author of more than 300 original articles and reviews. We were proud to co-organize with him the 11th Cerebral Vascular Biology Meeting and 18th for BBB signalling in Paris in 2015.
He liked so much to transmit, exchange, share his immense knowledge and scientific culture. Those who knew him will remember his great generosity, his extraordinary energy to lead new projects and his true vocation to teach pharmacokinetics. Today we lose an exceptional colleague and close friend who has mentored many of us along their scientific careers, always with enthusiasm and kindness. We will remain immensely grateful for all he taught us, both at the scientific and personal levels.
We express our sincere condolences to his wife and his family.
