Malcolm 2bThis award was established in memory of Dr. Malcolm Beverly Segal who passed away in the summer of 2019. Segal was one of the “funding fathers” of the Gordon Research Conference on “Barriers of the CNS,” which started in 1999 and continues to be one of the leading conferences in the field. The award is intended to be given at the “Barriers of the CNS” GRC meetings to young investigators in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the brain barriers research.

Malcolm Segal was born 1937 in Goodmayes, Essex, UK. He obtained his Ph.D. in 1970 from University College London, UK. Being trained in Hugh Davson’s laboratory, Segal became one of the pioneers in research on cerebrospinal fluid physiology and the choroid plexus. He co-authored over 100 original papers and numerous books, including the comprehensive cornerstone book on the CSF titled: “The Physiology and Pathology of the Cerebrospinal Fluid,” whose second edition was published in 1996. This book remains a highly valued source of information on CSF physiology and brain barriers. During the course of his career, Segal trained a number of young scientists and collaborated with many young colleagues around the world.
